Are Personal Assistant / Executive Assistant skills transferable?
We have spoken to several candidates recently who are experienced PA’s/EA’s and are exploring changing their career path, it has resulted in discussions just how transferable a PA/EA’s skillset can be to other roles.
Although some training may be necessary, and like anyone embarking on a new role, there will be a transition and adjustment period, I wanted to highlight some of the fundamental competencies and skills possessed by PA/EA’s. Skills that would significantly contribute to success in numerous professional positions, extending beyond the realm of assistant roles.
Organisational skills
PA’s and EAs are experts at organisation. They have a keen eye for detail and are able to manage multiple tasks and priorities seamlessly, skills that prove invaluable in any role that requires planning and coordination.
Communication skills
Interacting across the business with all levels of seniority, internal and external stakeholders and often being the ‘go-to’ person mean PA’s/EA’s have excellent communication skills. Encompassing the ability to convey idea’s clearly, actively listen and be able to adapt to others communication styles to ensure the seamless exchange of information. A skill that would contribute to success in any role!
Problem solving
Navigating unforeseen problems is often part of an PA/EA’s day to day, the ability to analyse challenges and identify solutions mean they are well suited for any role that requires quick thinking and effective decision-making.
Time management
PA/EA’s do not only manage their Executive(s) time effectively and efficiently, but also their own. Having a strategic approach to optimising productivity and making sure deadlines are met is a universally valued skill across industries.
Commercial awareness
PA/EA’s work so closely with their executives they are exposed to market trends, competitor dynamics and organisational goals. This strategic perspective is a skill and enables them to contribute meaningfully to the commercial success of any organisation.
While the specific duties and tasks of an EA/PA may vary, the underlying skills developed in this role are versatile and can be applied in various professional settings.
So our answer is a big firm YES, the skills of an EA/PA are often highly transferrable across various industries and roles.
