The start of a new year gives people the chance to reflect on the negative aspects in their life and think about how they can iron them out in order to be more successful in the 12 months ahead. Many people resolve to become healthier and happier versions of themselves. They may decide to leave bad eating habits in 2016, to learn a new language or to take up running.

But what if your mantra for 2017 is less “new year, new me” and more “new year, new job”?

If a career change is something that you’ve set your sights on for 2017, we’re here to help! Follow our five-step guide to help you secure a new job and make this year your best year yet:

Step 1 – Decide what you’re looking for

Give yourself plenty of time to reflect on your current job and weigh up which aspects of it you like and which you don’t. Realising what you like about your current job should help you to identify the type of role you’re after.

Step 2 – Make sure you’re prepared

Once you’ve decided what you are looking for, you’ll need to review your CV. Compare the requirements for prospective jobs with your current CV. It may be that you’ll need to sit an exam or gain extra experience through voluntary work so that there are no gaps.  Remember that your CV and cover letter should be tailored to every different job you’re applying for.

You should also take an objective look at your presence online. Social media is a great way for employers to weigh up candidates so make sure that your profile gives them the right impression.

Step 3 – Be creative with your job search

When searching for a new job you should always take an active approach. This may be through networking or contacting a recruiter. A recruitment agency will be on hand to offer professional advice and allow you to access job positions that are exclusive to them.

Step 4 – Practice your interview technique

Before any interview it is essential that you do your homework and research the company. Being prepared will help you to feel more at ease during the interview and also show your interviewer that you are keen. Don’t forget that interviewers will be expecting you to ask them questions too, so always have a couple of killer questions https://lilyshippen.co.uk/4-killer-questions-ask-interview/ at the ready!

Step 5 – Stay positive

Arguably this can be the most difficult of the 5 steps but making sure that you stay upbeat during your job search will stand you in good stead. Don’t let rejection affect your confidence. If you haven’t already received it, ask for constructive criticism and use this as a way to prepare for your next interview. Reflecting on what could have gone better and using it to move forward is a great way to turn a negative into a positive.
